El Mouled

“El Moulid” or “Mawlid al-Nabiwi” is the celebration of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is an important religious and cultural event in many Islamic countries, including Tunisia. During this celebration, various activities and ceremonies take place, including processions, prayers, recitations of poetry and hymns, and gatherings at mosques and other religious sites.

In Tunisia, people often visit the city of Kairouan to witness the celebrations organized by different Sufi groups. Kairouan is one of the holiest cities in Islam and is known for its rich religious and cultural heritage. The celebrations usually start at the historic Oqba Ibn Nafaa Mosque, which is considered the oldest mosque in Africa. Participants then engage in processions through the medina, accompanied by songs, musical instruments, and chants praising the Prophet Muhammad.

These celebrations are not only religious events but also occasions for communities to come together, express their faith, and celebrate the teachings and life of the Prophet Muhammad. Sufi traditions, with their emphasis on music, poetry, and spirituality, play a significant role in these celebrations, adding to the festive atmosphere.
